VR Escape Game – “Climate Change VR”

Project Introduction
This game is designed based on the “Geography E-learning Package about Climate Change, Version 2.0” co-developed by the Ho Koon Nature Education cum Astronomical Centre (sponsored by Sik Sik Yuen) and the Hong Kong Observatory. Aligned with three guiding questions from the “Geography Curriculum and Assessment Guide (Secondary 4-6)”—”6. What are the causes of global warming?”, “10. What impacts will climate change bring? How will it affect our lives?”, and “11. What can people do about it?”—the game utilizes virtual reality (VR) technology to vividly present concepts, knowledge, and phenomena related to climate change within an “escape room” game framework.

The game features six interactive scenes and four extreme weather survival challenges, encouraging students to learn through problem-solving. By progressing through the levels, students explore effective solutions to climate change, gaining relevant knowledge, skills, and values along the way.

Storyline
Human activities have released large amounts of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. These gases absorb part of the infrared radiation emitted by the Earth and re-radiate it in all directions, with some returning to the Earth’s surface, thereby heating it and causing global warming.

As a result, Arctic Sea ice is shrinking, leaving polar bears with limited space for movement and hunting. Meanwhile, ocean warming causes seawater to expand, and melting ice flows into the ocean, leading to a global rise in sea levels. Both polar bears and humans face an existential crisis…

In the game, the player starts as an environmentally irresponsible student who often wastes resources. One day, he collapses on the street due to extreme heat and wake up to find himself trapped in a laboratory by a mysterious scientist, Dr. Polar Bear. By completing tasks and learning effective strategies to combat climate change, the player successfully escapes and resolves to become an environmental scientist. Ultimately, he succeed in saving both polar bears and humanity from his impending fate.

Will be launched in December 2025.
